Houston retail brokerage expands leasing, development team

Houston-based Baker Katz, a retail brokerage, recently recruited two real estate specialists, one of whom will focus on build-to-suit developments.

John Frazier and Matt Reese joined Baker Katz in early September, the firm announced in a statement. Before joining Baker Katz, Frazier spent time on McCord Development’s development team for the 4,000-acre Generation Park project and also worked at Axis Tenant Advisors. In his role at Baker Katz, Frazier will focus on tenant representation and project leasing.

Reese has more than a decade of experience in retail real estate development, per the firm, and will focus on build-to-suit developments and fostering long-term relationships with retailers.

“Their individual qualities, combined with their vast knowledge of completing transactions in this industry will be an asset to the team as we welcome additional clients,” Baker Katz’s Jason Baker said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Baker Katz closed on roughly two acres at 820 Bay Area Blvd. just down the street from the recently renovated Baybrook Mall. Baker Katz plans to build two buildings totaling 15,000 square feet that’ll house between three and five restaurants.

Inside the Loop, Baker Katz is working to redevelop a two-story building located at 1919 Washington Ave. that it acquired in late 2016. Baker said the firm is in discussions with a nontraditional tenant for the second floor of the building. The tenant isn’t “retail in nature,” he said, and is more unique than an office tenant.

“I’ve never been so excited to own a property as I am to own this one,” Baker told the Houston Business Journal in 2016. “I wouldn’t say it’s a first to Houston (concept), but it’s darn near first to Houston.”

Baker Katz is also under contract on a couple of sites in southeast Houston and Pasadena, Baker said, but wouldn’t disclose further details.
